THE AUDITION
The Audition is visual project that functions both as a single-image poster and as a series that addresses themes of identity, womanhood and patriarchal norms. Inspired by the theory and term of “gender roles”, it considers the language of theatre in comparison to societal structures, and depicts the performativity of the role we have to play.
It pairs clothes with poses and mannerisms, playing into the cliches of characters we see on-screen and recycled in real life. Within the media we consume, we can identify if a female character is a mother, a mess or a mastermind based off the clothes she wears and the minute behaviours attributed.
By visualising an audition for all these characters and roles, the series aims to depict the performativity of playing into them, and the way that women are conditioned to fit into a trope and trajectory for the entirety of their lives. A part of the female experience is often subconsciously wondering which role we should play, and losing a sense of identity.
