Natalie K. Haigh is a creative director and photographer, specializing in narrative and surrealist imagery within the realms of fashion, portraiture, and conceptual photography. Driven by the theatrics of fictional media and entertainment, she draws inspiration from books, cinema, and performance to build a different world for each photo. Her artistic practice is first and foremost creative direction, which lends itself to photography, filmmaking, writing, styling, and set design. She views the photographic medium and other outlets as different channels to communicate her creative world, which exists as one body of art. This imaginary world can be applied to both commercial and autonomous works, interlinking the various purposes under one visual aesthetic.
Growing up with a wild imagination, Natalie’s work has always been an extension of herself and her own fascinations, making her ideas authentic and explorative. Her long background in theatre nurtured a love for world-building and character creation, but also fostered a deep fascination for costumes, set design and lighting. Then, whilst studying film in high school, Natalie found she thrived in directorial positions and shaping visual identities for projects, to create the big picture. She now enjoys using analogue mediums and old video cameras to capture concepts in a way that communicates them differently against the backdrop of today’s clean visual culture.
Captivated by contradictions, Natalie uses her stories to subvert stereotypes or change endings – whether it’s a horny housewife, vengeful valentine, or sad superstar - her work aims to embody some element of complexity. Her love for plots and climaxes allows her to reimagine the world in a way that can resonate and revitalise an audience’s perspective, with both eye-catching visuals and thought-provoking themes. Regardless of whether it’s an editorial, commercial, or personal project, Natalie K. Haigh knows that there’s always a tale to be told.
