SUPPLY & DEMAND
At first glance, Supply and Demand looks like a book left untouched on the shelf. With a thick black cover devoid of creativity, it blends into the dense rows of any library. But despite the lack of color, this book can chameleon its way into many hands, merging into the shelves of business, finance, design, art, the humanities and science. Its purpose is not so much as to perform as it is to infiltrate. Infiltrate spaces that may not want it there. Because this business book is actually about sex work, and the way we’ve come to misunderstand it.
This project was an explorative period of research that engaged in talking to sex workers in the Netherlands to better understand their perspectives. For a topic with so much discourse and drama, the book aims to reflect the calm and clear views of sex workers about the simplicity of what they do.
The more complex conversations are a big part of sex worker communities, but to summarise with a popular motto: “no work about us without us!” The conversations we have from the outside can be harmful in abetting wrong understandings and fostering rhetorics that impact sex worker safety.
This book therefore addresses only a corner of the topic, but nonetheless the one that has been heavily misconstrued from the outside, from various sides of the political spectrum. It addresses the choice, autonomy and valid opportunity found in choosing sex work as a profession and preference.
This project has been printed as a book and can be requested in physical copy to see its entirety. Please feel free to make contact.
